Rudolph "Rudy" William Humpal, age 87, of Decorah, IA died on Wednesday, March 14, 2012, in Rochester, MN, after a short illness.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 19, 2012, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA, with Rev. Donald Hawes presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, at the Balik Funeral Home in Spillville, and also after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Monday morning. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Rudolph William Humpal was born May 2nd, 1924, the 5th son of James & Christina (Phillips) Humpal of Ridgeway, IA. He attended the Country School in Conover, IA for 8 years and high school for 1 year in Spillville, IA. In February, 1945, Rudolph entered into the service at Ft. Bliss, TX, where he received training for twelve weeks then went overseas to Breman, Germany where he was an MP Patrol for American Supplies. He returned home in February, 1947. Rudolph married Rita Luzum, daughter of William & Leona (Schissel) Luzum of Calmar, IA on September 16, 1947 at St. Aloysius Church in Calmar. To this union seven children were born. Rudolph & Rita farmed for over 40 yrs. near Ridgeway and close to the home farm and several brothers until they moved to Decorah, IA. Rudy worked for Gemini, Inc. in Decorah for over 20 yrs. until he retired at age 86 in 2011. Rudy & Rita shared a love of dancing and were regulars at the Inwood Ballroom and enjoyed their many Polka Trips to Gibbon, MN with friends. Rudy was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville and St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah. He was also a proud member of the Clarence Bily American Legion Post #467, in Spillville, IA.
Rudolph is survived by his loving wife of sixty-four year: Rita Humpal of Decorah, IA. Seven children: Judy (Herbert) Kleve of Calmar, IA; Ronald (Karlene) Humpal of Calmer, IA; Thomas (Jeri) Humpal of Ridgeway, IA; Patricia (Kevin) Vannett of Mandan, ND; Eugene Humpal (special friend Denise Drenth) of Calmar, IA; Nancy (Robert) Gehling of Calmar, IA; and Pamela (Darryl) Holien of Brooklyn Park, MN. Eighteen grandchildren and step grandchildren: Shawn (Kendra), Holly, Nicole & Mark Kleve, Terri (Lee) Holthaus, Ronda Humpal, Stacy (Shawn) Kleppe, Stephanie (Randy) Hemker, Jill (Heath) Hesse, Christi, Benjamin & Elizabeth Olesen, Trevor & Matthew Vannett, Brandi (TJ) Schissel, Mike (Allanda) Gehling, Steven Gehling and Matthew Holien. Eleven great grandchildren: Christian & Karissa Kleve, Brittany & Brennan Holthaus, Dimitri Humpal-Griffin, Caden & Cale Kleppe, Sid Hesse, Jenna & Jameson Schissel, and Emaleigh Gehling. Rudy is also survived by his brother, Stanley (Kay) Humpal of Decorah, IA. Brothers and sister-in-laws: Arnold (Irma) Luzum of St. Lucas, IA, Florence Hackman of Decorah, IA, Vic Luzum of Decorah, IA, Paul (Joann) Luzum of Calmar, IA, Loretta Collins of Decorah, IA, Francis Luzum of Cedar Rapids, IA, Joan (George) McCusker of Overland Park, KS, Monica (Tony) Steinlage of Decorah, IA, Bill (Jan) Luzum of Benson, MN, James (Arlene) Luzum of Apple Valley, MN along with several nieces & nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Rudy was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law & mother in-law, 4 brothers and their spouses, William (Emma) Humpal, Adolph (Ludmilla) Humpal, Paul (Rose) Humpal and Robert Humpal. Brothers and sisters-in-law: Clarence (Dorothy) Luzum, Leo (Darlene) Luzum, Gerry Hackman, Herman Steinlage, Kara Luzum, Esther Luzum and several nieces & nephews.
