Helen Balik

Helen Balik, age 92, of Spillville, IA, died on Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehab Center in New Hampton, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 25, 2011, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA, with Monsignor Cletus Hawes presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Friday at the Balik Funeral Home in Spillville, IA, and after 9:00 a.m., at the church on Saturday morning. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.

Helen Balik, age 92, of Spillville, IA, died June 22, 2011, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Helen Catherine Bouska was born April 30, 1919, to John and Agnes (Sazma) Bouska on the family farm near Protivin, IA. Helen graduated in 1937 from Rudolphinum High School at Protivin, IA. Helen married Robert J. Balik on April 16, 1941 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. They had eleven children. Helen enjoyed gardening, quilting, sewing, needlework, watching college and professional basketball, and playing cards. She delighted all with her baking. Helen was so very proud and loved all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church.

Helen’s survivors include her six sons: Robert (Cathy) Balik, Kalamazoo, MI; Anthony “Tony” (Jane) Balik, Cedar Rapids, IA; Jerry Balik, Spillville, IA; David (Deb) Balik, Marion, IA, Mark (friend, Paulette Doubek) Balik, Spillville, IA; and Steven (Terri) Balik, Spillville, IA. Five daughters: Kathryn Lowe, Conyers, GA; Joan Balik, Denver, CO; Ruth (Tom) Bernatz, New Hampton, IA; Mary Balik, New Orleans, LA; and Lynn Balik, Alleman, IA. Twenty-two grandchildren: Kelly (Cathy) Kuennen, Colleen (Rob) Cyrus, Christina Sorsen, Justin (Dawn) Hanna, Annette (Andrew) Clements, Peter (Carmen) Balik, Jeremiah Balik, Sara (Rob) Scott, Craig (Stacey) Lowe, Amy (Doug) Wayco, Kathy (Shane) Bohlmann, Jeff Bernatz, Tonya Balik, Jerita (Matt) Burreson, Scott Balik, Nicholas Balik, Jodi (Dave) Hanson, Lori (Aaron) Maldonado, Olivia (fiancé, Ben Henning) Balik, Noah (Danielle) Balik, Lee Balik, Maggie Balik. Twenty-nine great-grandchildren: John and Jimmy Dugan; Alexis and Victoria Kuennen; Logan and Brendan Sorsen; Michelle, Ranger and Benedict Hanna; Allison, Megan and Mitchell Clements, Isaac, Olivia, and Trevor Scott; Stefanie Wayco; Keegan and Sullivan Keel; Toni, Reese, and Robert Lowe; Michael and Lydia Bohlmann; Ava Burreson; Amelia, Liam, and Oliver Hanson; and Ethan and Helen Maldonado. Two sisters-in-law: Elmarie Bouska, Protivin, IA, and Marie Balik, Spillville, IA

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Balik on February 17, 2001; her parents: John and Agnes (Sazma) Bouska; three brothers: Leonard (Dorothy) Bouska in 1989, Cyril Bouska in infancy, and Edward Bouska in 2009; one sister, Lula (Frank) Murray in 1991; and. brothers and sisters-in-law: Margaret, Marcella, Mildred and Stanley Balik, Irma (George) Ebert, Viola (Leo) Carney and Delores (Clarence) Brom.
