History of Schluter - Balik Funeral Home

I n 1981, the Sensor – French – Anderson Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa was founded by Alan Sensor, Phil French and George Anderson. In 1982, Mark Balik became part of the funeral home and the name was changed to the French & Balik Funeral Home in 1988. Phil French retired in 1999 and sold to Dale and Karen Schluter, thus changing the name to the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home.



The French Funeral Home in Calmar, Iowa was founded in 1938 by Philip and Caroline (Chekal) French. Their son, Philip J. French & his wife, Dianne ran the funeral home until they retired in 1999. He sold the French Funeral Home to Dale and Karen Schluter and Mark Balik. Today they operate it under the name of the French Chapel.



The Chekal Funeral Home in Fort Atkinson, Iowa was founded in 1902 by Joseph Chekal. Joseph’s son, Julius Chekal returned to Fort Atkinson and helped with the funeral home until he died in 1954. At that time, Caroline Chekal French and her husband Philip bought the funeral home and operated it until, Caroline’s son, Philip and his wife Dianne purchased it in 1970. In 1999, the Chekal Funeral Home was sold to Dale and Karen Schluter and Mark Balik. Today it is operated under the name of the Chekal Chapel.
